The Association

The Code of Ethics for Members of the Judiciary specifically provides in Rule 27 that “Members of the Judiciary shall have the right to form their own professional association in order to safeguard their rights and interests, and individual members of the Judiciary shall be entitled to choose freely whether or not to be members of such a professional association. They shall also have the right to affiliate, whether through such professional association or individually, with other associations which may better attain or ensure the aims which their association aspires to.”

In line with the above, the Association of Judges and Magistrates of Malta was formed in January 2001 with the aim of promoting the interests of its members, including

  1. to promote the interests of its members in their professional capacity;

  2. to promote the independence of the judiciary;

  3. to promote the highest standards of judicial conduct among its members;

  4. to promote the general interests of its members, including those interests arising upon retirement from the bench;

  5. to promote the exchange of ideas on the administration of justice;

  6. to further the cultural, intellectual and legal proficiency of its members;

  7. to promote and maintain contacts with judges and magistrates abroad, with national and international associations, and in particular national and international associations of judges and magistrates.

Through the Association, the Maltese Judiciary is affiliated to the Commonwealth Magistrates and Judges Association, the European Association of Judges and the International Association of Judges.

The current President of the Association is the Hon. Mr Justice Joseph Zammit McKeon. The other members of the Management Committee of the Association are: Secretary, Magistrate Dr Francesco Depasquale; Treasurer, the Hon. Madam Justice Miriam Hayman; Members, the Hon. Madam Justice Lorraine Schembri Orland and the Hon. Mr Justice Robert Mangion.
