Judge Joseph A. Filletti (left, in photo), who retired from the Bench in February 2011 upon reaching the statutory age limit, yesterday presented his credentials to the President of the Republic of Portugal as Malta's non-resident ambassador to that country. Judge Filletti started his judicial career as a magistrate in 1979 and was later appointed to the Superior Courts in 1984. His last assignment as a serving judge was to the First Chamber of the Court of Appeal and, contemporaneously, to the Constitutional Court. He was for many years Malta's representative on the Steering Committee of Crime Problems (CDPC) of the Council of Europe, and served as ad hoc judge on the European Court of Human Rights. He also taught public international law at the University of Malta.
