On Wednesday 23 June 2010, The Hon. Mr Justice Joseph Galea Debono (click here for photograph) held his last sitting in court before he retires on July 18 on reaching the age of sixty-five years. As he was concluding his summing up to the jurors in a trial by jury which had begun on Monday, a number of judges, led by Chief Justice Vincent De Gaetano, and lawyers and friends of the judge quietly entered the courtroom and sat in the place reserved for the public. On completion of the summing up and after the jury had retired, the Vice-President of the Chamber of Advocates, Dr Edward Gatt, approached the bench and, on behalf of the Chamber and all those present, thanked Mr Justice Galea Debono for his years of service on the Bench. Dr Gatt singled out in particular Justice Galea Debono’s punctuality and the expeditious and efficient way in which he handled trials by jury as well as appeals from the Court of Magistrates (see article by Waylon Johnston in The Times under “Other Information” > “Documents”).
