A leading U.S. Supreme Court Advocate, Dr Carter Phillips, gave a talk on Wednesday 26 May 2010 on the subject of “Judicial Independence and Accountability”. The event, which was organised by the Judicial Studies Committee and the U.S. Embassy, was attended by Judges, Magistrates, the Attorney General and Judicial Assistants and other lawyers, and was hosted by the Chief Justice Vincent De Gaetano. Dr Phillips’ talk prompted debate about judicial delay and maintaining the integrity of the judiciary, with the participants comparing notes on the judicial systems in the United States and in Malta, and highlighting best practices in both countries. Dr Phillips’ visit to Malta was made possible through the efforts of H.E. Prof. Douglas W. Kmiec, U.S. Ambassador to Malta. After the talk, Dr Phillips was presented with a souvenir by the Chief Justice (click here to see photograph) and was later taken on a tour of the Law Courts.
