Mr Justice Tonio Mallia left Malta this afternoon for a thirteen day visit to the United States under the International Visitor Leadership Program sponsored by the US Department of State. Since the Program’s inception almost seven decades ago more than 290 current and former Heads of State and Heads of Government, 2,000 cabinet-level ministers and many other leaders from the private and the public sectors have participated in it. Participants from Malta include former Presidents and the current Prime Minister as well as several members of the judiciary including Chief Justice Vincent De Gaetano, Mr Justice Joseph Filletti, Mr Justice Joseph Galea Debono and Judge Joseph D. Camilleri.
Mr Justice Mallia will be visiting Washington DC, Reno (Colorado) and New York. While in Washington he is also expected to pay a courtesy call on John C. Roberts Jr., Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court.
On Tuesday 16 February 2010 the US Ambassador to Malta, Prof. Douglas W. Kmiec, invited Mr Justice Mallia and three former Program participants – Chief Justice Degaetano, Justice Galea Debono and Attorney General Dr Silvio Camilleri – to tea at his residence in Attard to discuss the details of Justice Mallia’s planned visit to the US. The specific program for Justice Mallia is designed to explore efficient administration of justice and effective prosecution of human trafficking. Also present for the meeting were Mr Thomas Yeager and Mr Elijah Waterman from the US Embassy in Malta (click here to see photograph).
