The Judicial Year 2009/2010 was inaugurated on Thursday 1 October with the now traditional sitting involving the full Bench of Judges and a number of Magistrates. The sitting was held in the Criminal Court. The President of the Chamber of Advocates, Dr Andrew Borg Cardona, and the Chief Justice delivered short speeches highlighting certain aspects of the workings of the courts. Both also stressed the need for a revision of the conditions of service of Judges and Magistrates. Present for the ceremony were The President of Malta Dr George Abela, the Minister for Justice and Home Affairs Dr Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici, the Attorney General Dr Silvio Camilleri, the President of the Chamber of Legal Procurators Mr Edgar Montanaro and the Shadow Minister for Justice Dr Jose` Herrera. Also present were many lawyers and legal procurators, the Registrars and Assistant Registrars. After the sitting, the Chief Justice and the Director General, Courts Division, hosted a reception in the Chief Justice's Conference Room.
Earlier in the day members of the Chamber of Advocates and of the Chamber of Legal Procurators, together with a number of Judges and Magistrates, attended mass in the Oratory of St John's Co-Cathedral, which was celebrated by Mgr Arthur Said Pullicino, assisted by Fr Thomas Moore OFM Conv.
